CANDLE-LIGHTING

The celebration of the Sabbath begins when one lights the candles, or when one recites the evening service, or at sundown --- whichever occurs first.  It is common to light the candles at 18 minutes before sundown. For candle-lighting times in your area, use your touch-tone phone to call (718) 774-3000.

Candles can cause house fires.  Put candles in a safe position --- away from pets and flammable materials.  Keep candles away from drafts to prevent rapid, uneven burning and excessive smoke.  Before lighting, trim the wick to 1/4 inch to prevent smoking or too large a flame.  Dripping wax is also a fire hazard; use holders large enough to collect it.

Light the candles, then use your hands to block their light from reaching your eyes.   Recite the benediction below, then move your hands away to see the lights.

E-lo-hei-nu, Me-lech Ha-o-lam,

a-sher ki-d'sha-nu b'mits-vo-tav v'tsi-va-nu
